Jacob Stainer Violine Hochbarock Absam 1678, Vorderseite

The model instrument is in a private collection. It has been adapted to modern playing practices; as is customary, the original neck has been replaced, but the original scroll has been reattached. Like many of his colleagues, Stainer built his violins in two sizes. However, only a few of the larger violins have survived. In its original form, the instrument features a lion’s head and a back and sides made of bird’s-eye maple. The top is made of hazel spruce, a wood that Stainer used in many of his instruments. In the replica, care is taken to select this wood, and the head is also copied with the greatest possible accuracy. The reconstruction of the components is based on originals, for instance, on the 1679 instrument, which is in its original condition. However, the authenticity of some components of this instrument is disputed.
